The Who What Where
The Comme Des Garçons label was founded in Tokyo by Japanese born Rei Kawakubo in 1969. It has since branched into 17 sub-labels including menswear and fragrances making it a huge fashion empire.
But Why Are We Celebrating It?
As a designer Kawakubo continually challenges conventional ideals of beauty, fashion and identity.
Further still Kawakubo’s ability to design relentlessly original and creative fashion while simultaneously marketing the brand to have such commercial success is overwhelmingly impressive.
As Andrew Bolton (Curator at the Costume Institute) puts it “she has defined the aesthetics of our time.”
