Yeojin Bae's refined silhouettes are regular on the red carpet, favoured by celebrities such as Jennifer Hawkins and Elyse Taylor. In fact, when Sex And The City's Sarah Jessica Parker, needed a look for Melbourne Cup she called on Bae's signature tailoring for the big day.
We caught-up with the Melbourne-based designer in the lead-up to her presentation at VAMFF, keep reading for Yeojin's take on autumn / winter's key trends...
InStyle: Can you talk us through your new autumn winter collection?
Yeojin: Sure, so the collection is still very much tailored which is something I really love exploring, I like the light forms that feel elegant and sophisticated but it’s a little bit more playful because there are a lot of frills, and when we do the frills we sort of had a little bit of explosion. So you’ve got the tailoring mixed back with the frills and the gathers going in different places. So it feels a little bit more playful for me this season. Eve got a lot of the bold colours that I love such as red and pink, red is very much a signature colour for me.
InStyle: You touched on red being a signature colour, do you think there is a colour that is going to be really on trend this season?
Yeojin: I always see pink being quite strong, especially in the early stages of winter because it looks really lovely against the skin. But for me, I have had a bit of a love affair with yellow satin, and I’m not sure if anyone else will be touching on it but I really felt that I had to put yellow satin in this season. And it as something I was really drawn to.
InStyle: For some people yellow can be an intimidating colour to wear, how do you get it right?
Yeojin: I've done a much richer yellow which I think is a bit more flattering. But I think then its very paired back, you don’t need to do too much with it, and depending on your hair colour you can kind of have a bit of fun with the shoes – if you’ve got really dark hair, wear really dark shoes to give that contrast with the yellow. But if you’re softer in colouring, it might be beautiful to keep it all nude or beige.
InStyle: In terms of silhouettes, what shapes are we going to be seeing?
Yeojin: So, definitely got the body-con but a bit more playful like a high neck bodycon with the explosion of ruffle at the hem. I’ve done a little bit more minis this season, I often find in autumn winter you can do minis a bit more – its kind of cool with a boot or some cute hosiery or even a dart. So I definitely felt drawn to doing a bit more shorter lengths, and then I have got in the satin and in the floral a little more bias cuts so they break a little softer against the body.
InStyle: Do you have a favourite moment where you have seen your dress on someone and thought its amazing to have been able to dress them?
Yeojin: I actually dressed Sarah Jessica parker and I actually got to meet her when I did hat. Which was really cool because I actually did the fitting directly with her and that was when she was in Australia so it might have been about 4 years ago, and she was so lovely!
