Ring Road, Iceland
Heralded by celebrities and the backdrop to numerous television shows and movies, Iceland is a bucket-list destination for good reason. From the Northern Lights to the unparalleled natural beauty of its wild coastline, Iceland is famous for some of the most epic and mind-blowing scenery the world has to offer. Better yet, circling the entire island is Ring Road, making almost every glacier and waterfall accessible to those travelling by car. 1332km in distance, the full trip should take roughly 10 days. And while mountain tops covered in snow might seem like a romantic ideal, it’s not recommended to drive around Iceland in the wintertime. Instead, travel in the warmer months when the days are longer and the risk of getting stuck in a snowstorm much less.
Milford Sound, New Zealand
There are many reasons why Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s major attractions, and Lord Of The Rings didn’t even make the cut! Located in a remote corner of the South Island, the fjord is defined by sheer cliff faces and insanely picturesque views. Reachable mainly by road, the drive crosses the incredible Southern Alps and runs alongside glassy lakes and rivers. If travelling from Queenstown, recommended stops include the Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu.
Big Sur, California
Starting in San Francisco and ending in Los Angeles, this road trip is larger-than-life. The 144km stretch of coastline not only inspired the likes of Jack Kerouac and Henry Miller, but also stars in almost every memorable car commercial ever made. Rugged cliffs and pretty beaches, complete with a jaw-dropping bridge suspended over the Pacific – as seen in the opening credits of HBO’s Big Little Lies – this drive is one Instagram snap after the next.
Hana Highway, Hawaii
If rolling the windows down and blaring your Summer Sounds playlist is more your vibe, then Hawaii is a fantastic spot to see by car. Skip the cocktails for a day and jump on the Hana Highway. While only a short drive in total (two to three hours), the copious photogenic stops along the way will turn this day trip into an overnighter. Must-stops include Paia Town, Twin Falls and Koki Beach.
Road-Trip Tip: while taking a road trip overseas is a great way to see and experience more, it can be quite stressful. The Audi women’s drive days are a great way to brush up on your driving skills before you hit the road, enjoy a gourmet lunch and take home some great gifts. Hosted by an Audi Ambassadors Lisa Wilkinson and Stephanie Gilmore, the next and final event of the year is in Melbourne on the 23rd of October. Make sure to book in. Aloha!
