Who Wore It Best? Our Favourite Looks From The 2019 Oscars
Being the most talked about awards show of the season, the Oscars are a big deal when it comes to the red carpet. With designers spending hours making the perfect gown, stylists spending months — if not a year — planning for the photo moment, and celebrities proving they have the best eye for style, the Oscars red carpet is hotly anticipated for good reason.
This year was no different. From Irina Shayk in Burberry to Lady Gaga wearing Alexander McQueen, the red carpet was one of the best, with our favourite stars really stepping up their red carpet game for the night. And naturally, we had opinions on who did it best. Below, the InStyle team round up our favourite outfits from the red carpet, because let’s be honest, there’s always a winner with a red carpet.
Irina Shayk in Burberry
Jo Upfill-Brown, Art Director:
I like Irina Shayk in Burberry. I like the simple column silhouette from the front and the surprise cutout back.
Gemma Chan in Valentino
Emily Taylor, Editor:
I’m living for Gemma Chan in fuchsia Valentino couture. She’s been favouring creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s designs lately, but this hot-pink confection is her best look yet. Equal parts daring (the show-stopping shade) and demure (the full-sweep skirt and high frilled neckline) this gown is my Oscar winner. Oh, and it has POCKETS! Dead.
Isabelle Truman, Assistant Digital Content Manager:
I can’t go past Gemma Chan in her hot pink Valentino gown. The Oscars red carpet is a time to go big and Gemma looks absolutely incredible.
Grace Back, Digital News and Entertainment Editor:
Gemma Chan all the way! She’s been nailing her award season and this is no exception. Plus, totally on trend with the pink.
Jo Upfill-Brown, Art Director:
I love Gemma Chan in Valentino. I love the voluminous silhouette, unexpected colour and innovative fabric. The pockets are great too.
Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton
Hannah Crawley, Digital Content Manager:
Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton is perfection. An understated sparkle and structure in all the right places.
Lucy Boynton in Rodarte
Bettina Tyrrell, Beauty Editor:
She was easily my favourite character in Bohemian Rhapsody and lately Lucy Boynton is my favourite celebrity on the red carpet. While I’m not completely sold on her Rodarte gown, her beauty look is perfection. A plum-hued eyeshadow puts a contemporary spin on her look which speaks to old Hollywood glamour. She is divine!
Lady Gaga in Alexander McQueen
Natalie Mell, Fashion News Editor:
I loved Lady Gaga channelling Audrey Hepburn on the red carpet, especially because the elegant McQueen look still felt very Gaga thanks to its sculptural silhouette and the addition of leather gloves. And oh my gosh that Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace! Swoon!
Sarah Paulson in Brandon Maxwell
Lucy Wood, Junior Fashion Editor:
I love how Sarah Paulson is so effortlessly cool in this show-stopping Brandon Maxwell gown. Berry pink, sporty cut-outs and a jewelled neckline make for an unexpected knockout look.
Charlize Theron in Dior
Alex Noonan, Digital Content Director:
I love this look! It’s so grown up and chic and proves that you don’t have to be OTT or revealing to make a statement. That shade of blue beautifully offsets her incredible jewels and deep chocolate bob, while the orange-red lip makes her beauty look modern.
Kiki Layne in Versace
Lulu Custance, Market Editor and Fashion Office Manager:
On anyone else this sculptural Versace look certainly could have been a risk, but not for Kiki Layne. Elegantly styled with minimalist jewellery, this look is the perfect colour and shape for the If Beale Street Could Talk star.
Laura Dern in Rodarte
Francesca Wallace, Senior Digital Fashion Editor:
I’m currently obsessed with all the leather on the runways, so it’s nice to see it on the red carpet. The ruching, the colour — she can’t do wrong in my eyes!
