"This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives," a statement from the couple to PEOPLE reads.
"Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine. George is sedated and should recover in a few days," they joked.
With celebrity baby names ranging from Apple Martin to North West and everything in between, it's quite surprising to see two such high-profile stars to choose classic names. So why Ella and Alexander? Well, for starters, they happen to be two of the most popular baby names in America, according to the Social Security database.
Alexander ranked at No. 11 for boys in 2016 and has remained in the top 200 names since the 1900s, while Ella hit No. 17 for girls last year and has ranked among the top 10 over the years.
"Ella and Alexander are both fashionable classic names that have been around for centuries yet rank high on the popularity list right now," the creator of the baby-name site Nameberry reportedly said. "They're lovely names that are compatible without being too matchy for twins. Definitely no crazy celebrity baby names here. But I can't help wishing for something a wee bit more creative!"
According to Babycenter.com, Ella is a “a short form of Eleanor and Ellen, meaning ‘light.’ It can also mean ‘beautiful fairy woman’ in English, and ‘all’ or ‘other’ in German.”
Meanwhile, the site defines Alexander as Greek for “defender of men”: “Countless kings and emperors named Alexander have ruled since the time of the ancient Greeks.”
Congratulations to the happy couple, we can't wait to meet the gorgeous twins.
