Firstly, what’s all the fuss about? Everyone’s talking about retinol these days, and for good reason. It’s not just a passing trend, this stuff seriously works. It can help with wrinkles, uneven skin tone, loss of firmness and dullness. Another name for vitamin A, retinol helps prevent fine lines and wrinkles and accelerates cell turnover to reduce pigmentation and increase skin radiance.
Sounds good, right? Well, it is. But there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Given how powerful retinol is, it’s not surprising that it can easily irritate skin if not used properly. It’s always recommended that you start off slow with retinol, and if you don’t experience any redness or irritation, then you can increase your dosage to daily. And for those with dry skin specifically, follow these top tips.
1. Use an oil formula
Creams and serums aren’t your only option when it comes to getting your retinol fix; you can now find it in a facial oil, which is great news for dry skin types. You get all the anti-ageing goodness of retinol, along with the nourishing qualities that you adore in a facial oil. Face oils are able to penetrate into the skin and help reinforce the skin’s ability to retain moisture, which is one of dry skin’s biggest issues.
Neutrogena® Rapid Wrinkle Repair® retinol oil is lightweight yet nourishing, and quickly sinks into the skin so there’s no greasy residue hanging around. It leaves skin feeling instantly soft and hydrated, while working overnight to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and pigmentation thanks to Retinol SA in the formula. Retinol SA is not only a superior form of vitamin A, it also has a sustained action that works to continuously renew the look of skin throughout the night. Expect to see results – including less visible fine lines – from this powerful treatment in as little as one week.
2. Follow with a moisturiser
Facial oils are excellent skin hydrators all on their own, but following your application with a moisturiser will improve your skin’s moisture levels even further and add a protective layer for your dry skin. You can even double up on your retinol fix in the process by pairing Neutrogena® Rapid Wrinkle Repair® retinol oil with Neutrogena® Rapid Wrinkle Repair® regenerating cream. The Rapid Wrinkle Repair® regenerating cream contains Retinol SA, just like the oil, along with hyaluronic acid – one of the best hydrating ingredients around. Also good to know: When layered together, these two products offer 240% more retinol than just the cream alone.
3. But be careful what other ingredients you’re using…
While a retinol oil and a retinol cream make a great duo, retinol doesn’t always play nice with other ingredients. While using retinol, avoid harsh ingredients like exfoliating beta hydroxy acids (BHAs like salicylic acid) and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs like glycolic acid and lactic acid). This cocktail of active ingredients can irritate skin and cause dryness and redness. Since retinol is best used at night, save your AHA and BHA formulas for daytime use. Vitamin C is another ingredient that should only be used in the morning, when using retinol as part of your skincare routine. Retinol and benzoyl peroxide have been found to cancel each other out, making using them together a waste of time, money and product!
