According to Deadline, X-Files actress Gillian Anderson is set to take on the part of the famous British prime minister. However, despite the third season being set partially in the late 70s, it’s expected Anderson won’t appear until the fourth season, when Thatcher came to power in 1979.
Anderson, who has recently garnered attention for her role in Netflix’s Sex Education where she plays a sex therapist, is a favourite of the streaming platform — proven most recently by her latest appointment.
With season one and two already wrapped, seasons three to four of the hit show will see a brand new cast take on the iconic roles. Claire Foy will be replaced by Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth, Matt Smith will give up his role as Prince Philip to Tobias Menzies and Helena Bonham Carter will take on the role of Princess Margaret. A number of new faces will take on historically important roles, too, including those of Princess Diana and Camilla Parker Bowles.
The third season of The Crown will debut this year and will follow Queen Elizabeth’s life from the early 1960s. A release date is yet to be announced.
