It began on Sunday, February 24, when Swift posted a photo of palm trees. Taylor captioned the cryptic pic with seven palm tree emojis. One fan theorised on Twitter that the four trees clumped together on the left represent Taylor's four country albums and the two on the right are pop albums. The tree in the centre is, therefore, her upcoming album. The photo also raised theories that the pop star could be performing at Coachella later this year, with the symbol of the festival being the palm tree.
The theories didn't stop there, another fan claimed the palm branch is representative of "eternal life". At the Billboard Music Awards last year, Taylor had "eternal" stitched into her Versace gown. Others discovered that a version of Swift in the "Look What You Made Me Do" video is wearing a shirt with palm trees on it.
Following the palm tree photo, Swift posted a photo of herself the following day, and in it, she's sitting on the sixth step of a staircase. The photo is simply captioned with a pink heart.
The following day, Taylor posted a photo of herself in one of five holes in a fence, captioned with a yellow heart. Thus, fans began to click onto the fact that Taylor was counting down and is planning her big announcement for March 2.
Safe to say, Twitter had a lot of fun with the theories.
But of course, it doesn't end there. Shortly after revealing she was "even more excited" for her next chapter at the 2018 American Music Awards, Taylor posted another photo fans are linking all of this to now. In the photo, she's playing Scrabble with her mom by beautiful, sprawling flowers and her shirt has flowers on it. (It's also the same shirt she's wearing in the third photo clue of her behind the fence.) The photo is captioned, "Let the games BEGIN." Trying to guess the meaning of the flowers has caused some serious deep dives on the internet.
In any event, March 2 is coming and it's going to be big.
