While hot weather is perfect for outdoor pursuits, it can be less than ideal for your style. “Summer can ravage the health of your hair,” says hairstylist and R+Co creative director for Australia Barney Martin. "Sun, swimming, salt water and chlorine can all wreak havoc."
The sun’s UVA and UVB rays can alter the colour of dyed and untreated hair, as well as weakening the cuticle, leaving strands dry and brittle. In addition, swimming in chemically treated pools can destabilise colour and compromise hair health. But you needn’t forgo fun in the sun to save your ’do—Martin explains that you just have to treat your hair with the same care you would your skin. “Apply the correct products and see your stylist on a regular basis,” he says. “If you do colour your hair, use products with UV protectant, styling protectant and consider wearing a hat at the beach. Conditioning masks and leave-in treatments should also be applied on a regular basis.
