Bob, Joyce’s lovable new boyfriend, becomes the hero in the Jurassic Park-inspired Episode 8 as he risks his life to reboot the power in the lab and unlock the doors. His brave move sets Joyce, Hopper, Will, and Mike free from the “demo-dogs” roaming the labs. And just when it seems like he’s home free himself, Bob is attacked and eaten alive by a pack of demogorgons.
But according to creators Ross and Matt Duffer, Bob wasn’t even supposed to make it to Episode 8. “Bob was always intended to die, but we fell in love with Sean and what he was doing with this character,” Ross Duffer told Entertainment Weekly. “He was supposed to die in like Episode 4 and we just kept keeping him alive because he was so great and what he added to the show. Once we got to 8, we were like, we either got to do this or not do this. But I think it was important in terms of the stakes of the show. This is not a kids show and there are consequences and people do die. But we are sad to lose him because he really just blew us away.”
But don’t lose hope just yet—Bob could (somehow) make an appearance in Season 3, 4, or even 5. “I have some Bob ideas but I don’t know what to do with him,” Matt Duffer told EW. “I will say I would love to revisit the character of Bob in some way but I don’t know how to even do that.”
While Bob’s death has many Stranger Things fans calling for justice, Astin insists it’s unnecessary. “I was like, “I don’t care if Bob dies, but if I could do something heroic, I would love that. Just anything heroic.” No justice required for Bob,” Astin told EW.
Bob may not need justice, but Mews certainly does.
