Selena Gomez Reportedly Had A Panic Attack Before Her AMAs Performance
She hadn't performed live in two years
After a two-year break from performing to focus on her health, Selena Gomez opened the American Music Awards with her two new singles, 'Lose You to Love Me' and 'Look at Her Now' on Sunday night in the US, marking her official return to the stage.
Despite a show which prompted the first standing ovation of the night (and had her BFF Taylor Swift cheering wildly in the crowd), behind the scenes the 27-year-old was reportedly suffering from severe anxiety and had a panic attack in the lead up.

"Selena definitely had anxiety and a panic attack before she went out and was putting a lot of pressure on herself," a source told E! News. Though they didn't offer further details surrounding the singer's mental state, Selena posted to Instagram after the awards saying that it "Feels good to be back."
She continued, "Thank you to my entire team and to my fans that stand by me. All of this is for you and because of you. excited for this chapter."
In 2016, Selena announced she would be taking a break from touring to focus on her health, revealing that as part of her ongoing battle with lupus she was suffering from anxiety, panic attacks and depression. "As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I had lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways," she said in a statement. "I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges."
Selena added, "I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best."
Lupus is an autoimmune disease which causes the immune system to attack and inflame otherwise healthy organs and tissues. Last year, Selena had to get a kidney transplant because of it.
