5 Minutes With: Ruby Rose
Ruby Rose, 32 year old aussie actor and face of make-up brand Urban Decay spills her beauty and skincare secrets (like the trick behind those bold brows).
What is your favourite thing about make-up?
“On a personal level, it’s the transformation—being able to express myself however I want! Professionally, it’s how I create my characters. In lm, make-up and costume are the first things I consider, and being hands-on in that area is one of the key tools [I use] to make a fully rounded character.”
Can you reveal your best beauty hacks?
“I don’t play by the rules—whether I’m using lipstick as a blush or blush as eyeshadow, I just do whatever looks right and makes me feel a certain way. A little trick that I’ve picked up on set is, when you look exhausted, apply blush a little bit higher, so you look like you’re smiling without having to use energy [you don’t have] on
a 15-hour day. Also, I apply white eyeliner around my eyes so I look more awake.”
What does your daily beauty regimen consist of?
“I’m pretty pedantic when it comes to my skin. On a daily basis I make sure my skin is clean and I use sheet masks and mist. [I like] a lot of Éminence [Organic] products, as they’re really calming and they also have a really good spot treatment. If I don’t have that [on hand], I use lemon juice and apple cider vinegar. I’m obsessed with Sisley Paris White Ginger Contouring Oil For Legs—it’s so divine. I feel like I’m going to look like Gisele [Bündchen], with supermodel legs [when I use it].”
How do you like to unwind?
“When I get the opportunity to take a day o , I apply a mask and do a Zen session. I turn o my phone, get away from the computer, drink water and meditate. I listen to an Indian chill playlist on Spotify, take o my shoes and just relax—[it’s] invigorating.”
You have incredible brows. What are your grooming tricks?
“I did everything wrong and God has blessed me, because [at one stage] I thought it would be great to have the thinnest eyebrows in the world. I plucked all of my eyebrows until there was, like, one hair left, and just thought that it was so banging. I look back at photos now and it’s mortifying! I use the Urban Decay Brow Box because it has tweezers and a little brush—everything you need. If I’ve tinted them, I just use a wax to set them, but when I haven’t, I fill them in.”
You’ve had so many different hairstyles. Which has been your favourite?
“I like my hair short—it’s more manageable and it suits my personality and face shape. When I was 16, I shaved [my head] and I loved it. If a role came up where I had the opportunity to shave it again, that would be amazing.”
What beauty advice you would give to your younger self?
“Don’t pluck all of your eyebrows and don’t pick your skin. Leave your skin, brows and teeth, because they are what will make you unique and interesting-looking later in life.”
