The Royal Danish House confirmed the sad news that His Royal Highness Prince Henrik of Denmark has died at the age of 83.
The official statement reads: “His Royal Highness Prince Henrik died on Tuesday, February 13, at. 23.18 peacefully in his sleep at Fredensborg Palace. The Prince was surrounded by Her Majesty The Queen and their two sons.”
Prince Henrik's eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik is married to Australian-born Princess Mary.
Originally born in France, Henrick struggled to win over the hearts of the Danish people for much of his fifty year marriage to Queen Margrethe. In September 2017 he was diagnosed with dementia. On January 28 he was admitted to hospital in Copenhagen with a lung infection and a benign lung tumour.
Yesterday, the palace confirmed that Henrik was back at Fredensborg Palace “where the prince wishes to spend his last days.”
