1/ The Venue
The success of your event depends largely on the venue, so it’s crucial you get this right. “Consider what the venue can offer that others don’t, the things that will make your party special and memorable,” says InStyle deputy editor Tamara Davis. “For instance, does it have that elusive ‘vibe’? This can be hard to gauge, so I recommend checking out their Instagram page and sussing out the look and feel, as well as the crowd the venue is targeting.”
Looking for somewhere oozing a boho luxe vibe? The Flamingo Lounge in Sydney’s Potts Point channels 1970s Miami glamour, with Cuban Art Deco architecture, intimate bottle service booths and an expansive alfresco terrace. In other words, the ultimate backdrop for a glittering event.
Make sure you also consider transport options (“ideally there’s a taxi rank or good spot for Ubers close by,” says Davis) before you sign the venue’s dotted line.
2/ The menu
Two words: custom cocktails. From a never-before-tasted take on the ubiquitous Aperol spritz to a bespoke sip that means something to you or the birthday girl, custom cocktails give a party a certain special flair. Look for a venue with a killer cocktail list, and make sure the drinks are flowing all night. “Nothing kills a party faster than running out of alcohol,” warns Davis.
As for the food? Ensure canapes are bite-sized and readily available. “Always ensure you have a plethora of options for your guests,” Davis adds.
3/ The atmosphere
“A good event has something for everyone – think interactive elements that keep guests busy, like photo set-ups, dancing areas, and a lounge for those that want a more mellow night out,” Davis guides. Music is key: book in a DJ (there are some amazing female DJs out there right now) or – space permitting – live music, and check your venue has an adequate dance floor before you lock it in.
Creating Instagram-worthy moments is everything (and why a photogenic venue like Flamingo Lounge is so important). Add to the overall effect with picture-perfect elements like neon signs or masses of foil balloons. “Photogenic details are key for creating a vibrant party atmosphere,” Davis says.
