With every new season comes an opportunity to start anew. The spring 2019 collections at Paris fashion week looked to the future while referencing iconic hair and make-up trends of decades past.
Here, we revist the standout beauty moments as seen at Chanel, Dior, Valentino, Off-White, Miu Miu and Chloe.
1. Beachy glamour at Chanel
Imagine an off-duty Bridgett Bardot strolling though Saint Tropez in the '70s and that is preciously how Karl Lagerfeld interpreted beachy glam for Chanel’s resort 2019 show.
“It’s loose but luxurious beach hair,” hair stylist Sam McKnight told Vogue of the model’s textured waves. “The Chanel girl always looks after her hair, but she never over-styles it.”
Make-up artist Lucia Pica, used the brand's vibrant matte lip shade (launching in 2019) to add a splash of colour to the overall look.
2. Sequin Eyes at Valentino
Make-up extraordinaire Pat McGrath took the drama of a smokey eye and turned up the volume with the use of crystals. Mirroring designer Pierpaolo Piccioli's penchant for embellishement - McGarth used dozens of tiny Swarovski gems to create this alluring emerald green look seen here on Kaia Gerber.
3. Ballerina redux at Dior
Creative director Peter Philips at Christian Dior make-up was inspired by the ethereal ballerinas, which accompanied the new collection on the runway. Each model adorned their bun with a pale pink headband.
A graphic charcoal eye took the ballerina theme to a grungy new level and we’re here for it. Phillips created this look with, "a line applied to the waterline of the lower lashes with the Diorshow khol eyeliner. Then a hand drawn design on the temples with Diorshow Pro Liner."
4. Sleek and sporty at Off-White
Virgil Abloh’s sports inspired collaboration for Off-White was aptly titled Track and Field.
Sky-high ponytails (as seen here on Bella Hadid and Kaia Herber) are a welcome alternative to the messy bun we’re use to seeing among the fashion set. Simple make-up and flawless skin completed this athletic-inspired look.
5. French-girl bohemian at Chloe
“There was this hippie sort of vibe with wild, warrior-like lioness hair, almost like Tatjana Patitz,” explained hairstylist Paul Hanlon while speaking backstage, referencing the ’80s-era German supermodel.
Make-up artist Pat McGrath gave each model kohl rimmed eyes and a diffused red lip to complete the overall effortlessly cool effect. McGrath notes that sharp lines should be avoided at all cost when it comes to this beauty trend - try softly blurring out pigments using a sponge or your fingers.
6. Micro fringes at Miu Miu
For the last 25 years Miuccia Prada has delievered something unique at her runway shows and this year's offereing was no expection. Models wore their tresses long, contrasted with a blunt fringe inspired by the '40s screen sirens.
