Secondly, from 2020, the Oscars will air in early February rather than at the tail end of the month, which means a shorter awards season all round. But just as many great dresses, win!
Finally, and perhaps most significantly, the Academy is adding a new category for next year’s show. This is the first of its kind since 2001, when Best Animated Feature was added to the line-up, allowing classics like Finding Nemo and Up the acknowledgement they deserved.
The new category is for Outstanding Popular Film, which is set to be a gamechanger given it will open the awards up to not just critically acclaimed films, but more 'commercially successful' ones. Big-ticket blockbusters have often been overlooked in the past, and this will allow people-pleasers like your Marvel Universe offshoots to make the cut (think Black Panther, undoubtedly the year’s biggest runaway hit.) It also means more Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hardy et. al on the red carpet.
You know what they say–give the people what they want!
