The guy gained over a million followers in one day on Instagram when To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before dropped at Netflix and that number just keeps on climbing, with his current follower count sitting at a very solid 12.7 million.
However, being the internet’s dreamboat guy means Centineo has a lot of fans, and while some are just quiet, unobtrusive love-him-from-afar kind of fans - otherwise known as ‘Gram stalkers – some of his fans have taken their worship to the next not-cool level.
During a recent appearance on US talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live, when host Kimmel asked the 22-year-old actor if now that he’s so famous he can still go places, Centineo shared a story about when a group of fans crossed the line into scary stalker territory, “I had this one experience—I went to New York for some work, and I was at baggage claim and I had my headphones on… And then I felt a presence… and I had to sidestep and take my headphones out and there's like four people looking at me. And I was like 'Hi,' and they were like 'Hey, how was your flight?' And I was like, 'It was good, how was yours?' And they were like 'Oh no, we didn't fly, we're here for you.'”
Centineo continued, “They somehow knew I was flying into JFK and the time I was getting there. They parked in the same place where my driver parked, and they walked us to the car, and then they followed us into the city. And when we got into the city, I was like, there's totally people following us.”
Centineo says he asked the driver to perform some Baby Driver moves to lose the fans who were in a “white Honda Accord”. The driver lost them but the experience hit a nerve with the actor, who told Kimmel, “It was actually kind of scary, my life is kind of changing.”
But the story didn’t end there, Centineo told Kimmel the next time he went to New York for work the same fans were at the airport again, but they’d added a fifth person to the group. Centineo says he “walk[ed] up to them and I'm like 'Hi guys' and they're like 'Hey, we want to apologize,' and we talked it all out. I was like, 'Look, I love your love… but just please don't follow me.' They said goodbye, and I said goodbye, and then I just walked away.”
Awww, right? No wonder he’s the internet’s favourite boyfriend, he’s even polite to fans who’ve crossed way over the line.
