Whether you’re itching to get your hands on Balenciaga’s logo heels or you’ve screenshotted Madewell’s entire offering, the new spring season has plenty of fun to offer. This month, the InStyle team is embracing textured prints and gleaming metallics with a twist - shop our essentials below and start planning your warm-weather outfits now:
A statement skirt
If you buy one thing this season, make it a statement skirt, which can easily be dressed up or down.
“I’ve had this on my spring wish list for most of winter – ever since I saw it on Danish It-girls all over Instagram, I’ve been waiting until it’s warm enough to buy,” says Anna McClelland, InStyle’s Deputy Digital Content Manager. “Unlike many statement skirts, it’s machine-washable – a big win in my books as the lower my dry-cleaning bill, the better!”
To further ensure a special piece like this one lasts, add a fabric conditioner to your washing routine. It will help to smooth fibres, and smoother fibres help your favourite garments keep their shape and look for longer. Our pick? Comfort 4in1 SkyBlue Fabric Conditioner, which will leave your clothes smelling amazing and looking next level dazzling.
A midi dress
If you can’t quite bring yourself to stray from the midi-length hemline this season, don’t fret: it’s still going strong.
“This midi dress is the ideal transeasonal piece,” explains Lucy Wood, InStyle’s Junior Fashion Editor. “I’ll wear it underneath a gingham trench and add polka dot heels for extra drama.”
A printed canvas tote
Pack a sartorial punch by pairing your outfit with a statement tote this spring.
“The perfect weekend accessory, my canvas tote carry-all will run errands with me all Saturday long,” says Lulu Custance, InStyle’s Fashion Office Assistant.
The humble mule has long been a favourite of street style stars the world over. This season, update your look with a metallic finish.
“I’m a sucker for a party shoe, and these gleaming metallic mules have got me good,” says McClelland. “I’ll be wearing them to dress up jeans and anchor the season’s floaty dresses and skirts.”
A smock blouse
Florals? For spring? Trust us, they can be totally groundbreaking – especially when coupled with a bold silhouette.
“I love how this blouse just screams ‘spring’! I’ll wear this through to summer with linen shorts and a straw boater,” reveals Wood.
High waisted jeans
This season, update your denim by embracing a lighter hue. Be warned though: white jeans need extra care (and they don’t play nicely with red wine stains).
“An easy wear with chunky summer sandals, high waisted straight leg jeans are my go to for relaxed everyday comfort,” says Custance.
A ruffle shirt
Dress up your jeans by pairing them with a flirty yet feminine top this season.
“I’ll be living my best Pride and Prejudice life in this lacy ‘Austen’ blouse by LoveShackFancy this spring,” says McClelland. “Yes, it’s a bit more than I would usually spend on a top, but provided I care for it properly it should see me through seasons to come.”
The ultimate short sleeve tee
A basic tee doesn’t need to be expensive, and provided you care for it properly, will last you for seasons to come. Be sure to add Comfort 4in1 Sky Blue Fabric Conditioner to your wash to help tees remain fresh and crease-free.
“The start of a new season calls for a fresh new tee. I’ll pair this with a printed skirt, heels and jewelled earrings for sunset drinks,” says Wood.
A chic scarf
The quickest way to instantly add a little French chic to your spring outfit? A silk scarf, of course.
“Taking care of pesky fly-aways, a silk scarf knotted around a messy bun is my favourite beach day look,” says Custance.
