Just when you thought the Meghan Markle family drama couldn’t get any worse – now a friend of the Duchess of Sussex’s has claimed her father faked his heart attack as an excuse not to attend the royal wedding - and make the public feel sorry for him.
A source, reportedly close to Meghan, told The Daily Mail that the whole thing was made up after the embarrassment of the staged paparazzi photos.
"The whole story about Meghan's father undergoing heart surgery was made up,” says the source.
“He had to come up with a good enough reason not to attend her wedding and avoid any further embarrassment after those staged photos went public."
"The poor health story was his way of generating some compassion from the public, and taking the attention off those staged photos which were a complete embarrassment to Meghan and the royal family," the source continued.
"Of course Meghan is upset with him. Her father missed her wedding. He missed walking her down the aisle all because of that ill-conceived publicity stunt."
During one of Markle’s (many) interviews, he told ITV's Good Morning Britain that he had checked into the Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center—however the The Daily Mail reports that they reached out to the centre for confirmation of his visit, but the clinic replied that 'no such name' had ever checked into the hospital.
“It was really just such poor judgement on his part. Now everyone's feeling sorry for him,” the source added. “They shouldn't. He brought this upon himself and if he were truly sick Meghan would have made an effort to visit him. Don't feel sorry for him. If anything, feel sorry for Meghan.”
The claims come days after Markle gave two new interviews, claiming his daughter looks “terrified” of her new royal life and saying he’s “enjoying the fact that I can make the entire royal family not speak”.
Meghan’s estranged half-sister, Samantha Markle, also went on her own Twitter tirade this week after Meghan and Prince Harry’s visit to the Nelson Mandela Centenary Exhibition.
“How about you pay tribute to your own father?! Enough is enough,” Samantha writes. “Act like a humanitarian act like a woman! If our father dies I’m holding you responsible, Meg! @KensingtonRoyal.”
Samantha posts to her private account, but the Daily Mail has published screenshots of her most recent tweets here.
“Glad you have so much time to gallivant around paying tribute to others while ignoring your own father! How cold can you be and look in the mirror? Harry? I guess I was right,” she wrote.
As well as: “My father is not an embarrassment for loving his daughter! The Royals are an embarrassment for being so cold. You should be ashamed of yourselves @KensingtonRoyal.”
