Day two of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia didn't disappoint. The schedule was packed with shows from the likes of P.E Nation and Tigerlily, two brands that marked major milestones at fashion week this year, while Bec and Bridge and Mattaeu sent some very familiar faces down their resort 2020 runways. InStyle Fashion News Editor Natalie Mell takes you through her day on the ground.
Backstage at Bec and Bridge for a quick chat with Bambi Northwood-Blyth, who was gearing up to walk the MBFWA runway for the first time in 10 years. How did she prep for the big day? An infrared sauna and plenty of beauty sleep.
Titled Wipe Out, Bec and Bridge's collection was a nod to '70s surf culture, featuring palm prints, scuba fabrications and a whole lot of good vibrations. Bambi closed the show wearing one of the label's classic styles: a micro-mini party dress.
The street-meets-sport label continues to go from strength to strength, so it's no surprise that P.E Nation founders Pip Edwards and Claire Tregoning nailed their first solo MBFWA outing. After their uber-cool model gang stormed the runway, a video was projected onto a wall in front of the audience unveiling a swimwear collaboration with Speedo. But it didn't end there: to close the show, models returned decked out in the swim range which was road-tested under a makeshift waterfall!
Onto Tigerlily where a pretty sculpture garden set the scene for the brand's runway show—its first in 17 years. There was no mistaking the resort mood here; floral dresses and striped separates were accessorised with straw sun hats and wicker bags, while pops of sunny yellow and one particularly striking fuchsia suit lifted spirits high.
Matteau always nails effortless-yet-elegant summer staples, and this collection was no different. From perfectly puffed crop tops to linen suiting and stylish swimwear, I'll take one of everything, thanks! Also, Australian actor Phoebe Tonkin made a surprise appearance on the runway looking as dreamy as always.
The Innovators show showcased the work of six designers from the Fashion Design Studio, and we can assure you, the future is bright!
We quickly made our way over to beautiful Bondi beach for Jonathan Simkhai's show. The LA-based label has been worn by the likes of Emily Ratajkowski and Lady Gaga, but his sexy designs felt equally at home amongst Sydney's style set.
