Marimekko is the trailblazing Finnish design house responsible for innovating fashion in the sixties and seventies. Its enduring influence is the subject of a new art exhibition called Marimekko: Design Icon 1951 To 2018, now on at Bendigo Art Gallery.
This exciting exhibition chronicles Marimekko’s meteoric rise from the 1950s to the present, with more than 60 outfits, swathes of original fabrics, homewares, sketches and other archival materials.
Whilst Marimekko's unconventional ready-to-wear outfits brought colour and informality to a generation of newly liberated working women in the post-war era, their punchy aesthetic remains at the forefront of contemporary fashion trends.
The retrospective is on from now to June 11 at Bendigo Art Gallery in regional Victoria. Tickets start at $10; for more information visit bendigoartgallery.com.au.
