Bold shapes, vibrant colours and classic modernist designs are just some of the distinct features that have helped build Marimekko, which is celebrated worldwide for its fashion, original prints and homewares. If you're yet to be acquainted with the Finnish design house, prepare yourself for a bold and bright aesthetic and covetable luxury items.
Born in Helsinki back in 1949, the brand’s early days arose when Viljo Ratia founded a small textile printing company called Printex, and enlisted his wife Armi Ratia to help create striking prints. After collaborating with renowned fashion designer Riitta Immonen, they quickly transformed from a small textile printing company into a multi-hyphenate house in May 1951, when the Marimekko ‘lifestyle’ brand was officially born.
Beloved by style icons including Jackie Kennedy and Twiggy in the 50s and 60s, Marimekko soon made its mark on the international stage as one of the first true lifestyle brands to combine fashion collections, bags and accessories as well as home decoration into one unique point of view.
At the core of their business is a design philosophy that aims to bring joy to mundane, everyday life through bold, inventive prints, harmonious shapes and clever use of colour. From their bags, to their statement ensembles, to their textiles and ceramics, the joyful philosophy is embodied in every design.
From showing their collections each year at Paris Fashion Week, to working on collaborations with global brands including Uniqlo, Microsoft and Clinique, Marimekko have cemented their place in the industry as the go-to for high quality unique designs. The accolades continue for the new generation of Marimekko’s designers, who continue to create with both new and repurposed archived prints from the extensive Marimekko design catalogue.
Following rapid global expansion in the 2010s, the number of Marimekko stores outside Finland has more than doubled to include flagship stores around the world - including one in Sydney. From beautiful soft furnishings in its most famous design, Pieni Unikko (poppies), to the legendary Kivet (stones) pattern, their designs can be found in homes and wardrobes across the globe.
Marimekko is well positioned to continue to bring joy to the world for many years to come, and surely its founder Armi Ratia could not have known what the brand would become today when in 1978 she said, “Marimekko is not about trendy fashion. We make timeless and lasting products, which are by chance, often very fashionable.”
