"I've always been a really big fan of tan from a young age, but all the tans I used, they used to break me out because I've got really sensitive skin," Lottie says. "They used to go all over my sheets, so I used to get told off all the time for that.
"I also used to get really green, as well as a really orange colour. So, I decided to create a range which did all the things that the other tans didn't. So we created a clean, clear, vegan, cruelty-free tan, which doesn't smell. It doesn't go on your sheets, doesn't break you out, and it's just not got all the nasty chemicals that the other ones have. So that's where the inspiration came from, originally."
Lottie adds that she really wanted to create a brand that didn't have all the 'nasties' that used to leave her sensitive skin breaking out. "I just really didn't want it to break me out. I didn't want it to have the base colour in it because it doesn't actually need the base colour. That's more like a guide. So that's not actually what tan you see. I wanted to make it clear."
Lou, who is also a professional makeup artist, added: "I think the experience that we bring in is all about knowing shades and skin tones. We wanted to create a lot of shades within each colour, so obviously in light, it's got 12 shades, and so does medium and dark. Someone with fair skin can use it really easily, and then someone with deep skin can use it really easily too. I think you can understand that more when you've done makeup and you've worked with different skin tones."
"With the drops, you can use 2 to 12 drops, and that will give you 4 different shades. It's such a good entry-level product if you're not a regular tanner."
The self-tan drops are just one of the products in the Tanologist range. The concentrated drops can be mixed with skincare, makeup or body care to create a customisable tanner. The more drops you add, means the darker your bronze.
"We were trying to convert a non-tanner with this range," Lou adds. "That's what we want to do, rather than it being this huge transformation and you become a different person. The drops, you can just put in your SPF or your foundation - so it just gives you a bit of a glow."
When using the drops herself, Lottie admits to putting a bit of Vaseline in her hairline for the best effect.
"When I first started using the drops, I'd get a line on the hairline, so I'd just put a little bit of Vaseline on the hairline, especially if you're light-haired, and that just blends it in a bit better."
She continues, "I always use the water with a makeup brush, just before I go to bed. It's like a big foundation brush. You buff it round, and then you wake up with a really nice glow."
As for why Lottie decided to launch in Australia? "I think the Australian girl really embodies what we want our customer to be like. They're super natural, healthy, outdoorsy, and look after themselves, and love a sun-kissed look."
