Knee High Socks Are Making Their Comeback, Here's How To Nail The Trend
Believe it or not, there was a time when wearing knee high socks wasn't as outlandish as it sounds. In the '90s the trend was a big deal thanks to Alicia Silverstone's performance as Cher Horowitz in Clueless, and Sarah Jessica Parker's portrayal as the fashion-forward Carrie Bradshaw in Sex And The City. The knee high sock trend reached its most climax in 1998 when Britney Spears wore knee high socks in her '...Baby One More Time' video clip.
The trend pretty much exploded from there, and although it hasn't totally remerged, fashion girls and street style stars have been snapped wearing them of late and it can only predict their imminent return.
Below, the best ways to style knee high socks.
Go Classic
The beginning point for any trend, go classic! Nail the knee high sock trend by pairing an all-black ensemble with a pair of knee high stocking socks. Pair with a sleek bun and matching gold jewels and you can't go wrong. Caroline Daur perfectly demonstrates this while attending the Balmain Homme Menswear Fall/Winter 2019-2020 show as part of Paris Fashion Week.
Put An Athleisure Twist On It
Do as Rihanna does, and pair your knee high socks with a matching tracksuit. Matching male model not included.
Play With Matching Boots
Start slow, and add a pair matching boots with your knee high socks.
Go Modern
Rita Ora expertly shows us how it's done. Add a modern twist to the knee high trend by pairing stocking socks with a silk midi gown and pointed pumps.
Add A Bold Print
Balance out your knee high socks with a bold print. Influencer Blair Eadie perfectly layers a patterned scarf and coat with her socks, making it a perfect winter look.
Go Preppy
To perfect the knee high sock look, add a preppy trench and simple ensemble, à la Chloe Sevigny.
Play With Print And Colour
Thanks to Instagram, we're introduced to a whole new world of fashion that can inspire our own. Take a style note from Alexandra Lapp, who has perfectly played with colour and print to integrate knee high socks into her street style look. Add a pair of Manolo's and you're good to go.
Be Inspired
If you're struggling to discover new ways to introduce knee highs into your current style file, find inspiration elsewhere. Actress Olga Georges-Picot's knee high look from 1969 transcends time.
Try Monochrome
If you're looking to be experimental with your knee high socks, try going for a monochrome look. Tina Leung shows us how its done as she attends the Prada Show Fall/Winter 2019/20 during Milan Fashion Week.
Carrie Bradshaw It
Take a style cue from Carrie Bradshaw where she swapped pants for an oversized tee and socks in favour of boots.
