Kim Kardashian West Accused Of Cultural Appropriation Over Halloween Costume
Kim Kardashian West wore three Halloween costumes over the weekend, all of which paid tribute to musical icons.
Kim attended the 'Casamigos' Halloween party with her friend Jonathan Cheban, with the pair dressing as Sonny and Cher at the 1973 Oscars. She later attended a party with Kourtney Kardashian, with the sister's dressing as Michael Jackson and Madonna at the Academy Awards in 1991.
It was her third costume, however, that caused the controversy.
Kim dressed as the late singer Aaliyah, wearing a costume inspired by her look from the Try Again music video.
Kim was immediately slammed for cultural appropriation and was criticised for 'pretending' to be a black woman. However, others just as quickly rushed to defend the star for simply honouring an icon. A social media debate about racism and Halloween costumes was sparked, with the costume going viral as both sides voiced their opinions.
There were those against her costume...
And there were those who defended Kim against the criticism...
It's not the first time she - or the rest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan - have been accused of culturally appropriating from black culture, though they have only addressed the concerns in some incidents.
Kim is yet to comment on the backlash over her costume, though she has continued posting on social media as normal. It seems she is set to ride this one out without paying it any attention, though the internet remains divided on the issue. Let us know what you think in the comments!
