The sun is peeking through afternoon clouds at the south end of Bondi Beach as tourists hover with their phone cameras pointed at what must be Australia’s most Instagrammed ocean pool. In the bar of Icebergs restaurant, which holds prime position above the attraction, another local icon is making herself comfortable. In fact, Jessica Gomes is completely in her element. It’s a balmy 25 degrees, Friday knock-off drinks are underway, and by her watch, it’s almost—almost—aperitivo hour. “I would order an Aperol spritz, but I don’t know if I want to go there,” Gomes says with a laugh. She settles on water, but I get the feeling cocktails might be in order later. After all, the Perth beauty has a lot to celebrate.
The model, actor and skincare entrepreneur is in town for a whirlwind month of photo shoots and events—but having spent the past seven years in California pursuing a film career, these days Gomes is well and truly settled in the popular neighbourhood of West Hollywood, where there are more actors and movie people than there are, well, non-movie people.
“I love LA so much; I just feel like it’s where I’m meant to be,” she says, tucking her long brown waves behind her ears to reveal an eclectic display of gold earrings. More jewels adorn her wrists and neck, complementing the effortless ensemble she’s wearing today: a white Scanlan Theodore T-shirt, ripped blue jeans, silk blazer by Dries Van Noten (a recent investment purchase) and a tiny embellished Christian Dior handbag. It’s not uncommon to spot a model-off-duty at Icebergs, but Gomes possesses the unmistakable aura of an LA native.
