When it comes to spring racing season, there's only one sure thing and that's Jennifer Hawkins will win fashion. Come Colgate Optic White Stakes Day, she didn't disappoint! Wearing a white tailored suit by Elliatt and fun Gucci silk headscarf, the 33-year-old oozes the kind of confidence we all want!
Jennifer chatted to InStyle Australia about all things fashion (denim, always) her top beauty tips and pasta cravings (yes-really!)
InStyle: You always look great, do you have any spring racing style rules?
Jennifer: I think it’s beautiful to see a woman who’s really confident, and just feeling her outfit so, I don’t think it’s important to go too hard on a trend, and kind of work with what you think is right.
What about accessories?
Turbans are really on trend, and I’m really in to beautiful large brimmed hats. Headpieces and headbands, they’re very much in.
What’s your everyday uniform?
Distressed denim, jeans in general. Tees, singlets, sneakers. I live on the Northern Beaches where everything is just more casual. And I go out at night I just slip on a pointed pump. I love hats, I’m into hats, I’ll always like a felt hat on.
How does your husband Jake influence your style?
He loves me in jeans so maybe he does influence me, he just thinks they’re sexy.
When it comes to hair and makeup have you got any tips to make sure it lasts all day?
No. (laughs) It’s difficult. I think don’t go too hard with foundation, and it won’t slide. That way you can powder your t-zone. My biggest beauty secret is to really take care of your skin in the lead up, if you have nice glowing skin then you feel more confident.
What does your skin care regimen involve?
It’s really boring, I really love getting exfoliating treatments, I get one once a month and it’s really nice to clean everything out. And then I just moisturise every night and morning. And then it comes down to what I eat I can really tell in my skin, when I eat healthy and when I eat diary my skin is a bit more dull I guess.
Your hair is always so glossy, what's your secret?
I'm hair–obsessed. I love hair products! If there were a choice between make-up and hair I’d choose hair.
I like beautiful looking hair on all women, I think it’s nice to have shiny hair and if you want to make it a bit grittier you do that with product. I really like shine sprays and beach sprays so when you’re putting a kink or a curl in your hair it’s not too done. In my everyday life I think it’s really good to not wash it every day.
You recently revealed your day on a plate involves pasta?!
I think if you run a lot you can eat carbohydrates, your body needs it. I mean I crave it, but I eat healthy bread. I eat sourdough which is not as processed. I eat buckwheat pasta, it’s not bad to have carbohydrates! You have to exercise.
Were you always a runner?
Yeah! I started cross-country running in high school. I don't go on huge runs, I usually run for about 30 minutes.
What gives you confidence?
Having clear skin, that’s a massive one. Feeling well rested.
What do you never leave the house without?
Powder, lipstick, my phone, and a mini perfume and of course, my Colgate optic white.
What’s your signature perfume?
Right now I'm wearing Burberry.
It's been ten years since you won Miss Universe, any red carpet fashion regrets?
Many I’m sure, but at the time you’re into it. One day I’ll look back and go, why the f- was I wearing that?
Is there anything you would never wear?
I just wouldn’t wear a trend head-to-toe! I think it’s nice to make it your own.
What was your last fashion splurge?
My Gucci silk head scarf, I'm wearing it today!
What was your last affordable buy?
A nude lipstick. Lipstick is such a fun way to change up your look instantly.
