Smith was interviewing Foxx on Friday night at the Staples Center, where the actor was playing in the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, when he decided to ask about the relationship.
“I know you’re prepared because I saw pictures,” Smith said. “Did you and Katie Holmes play basketball for Valentine’s Day? Like some real ‘Love and Basketball?’”
Foxx wasted absolutely no time in taking off his mic and headphones, before walking away from the cameras in complete silence.
It might just be the most polite shade-throwing exit of all time:
Just bask in the awkwardness for a *few* more seconds by enjoying this shot of the sound guy:
For those wondering, these are the formerly mentioned Valentine's Day basketball pictures that Foxx would never, ever, like to talk about.
The famous pair are both notoriously private in their personal lives, so it makes sense they would not want to discuss their relationship in interviews.
However, many publications have reported that another reason for the secrecy is due to the fact that Holmes signed an unconventional agreement during her speedy ten-day divorce settlement from Tom Cruise in 2012. According to the reports, Katie agreed not to publicly date another man for five years as part of her divorce settlement, in order to secure child support for Suri.
"She’s allowed to date, but she cannot do so in a public fashion, and she’s not supposed to let any boyfriend near their daughter, Suri," a source has previously confirmed.
If true, the ban would have ended in August 2017. Those who've been eagerly keeping track of the pair would have noticed that, since August, Katie and Jamie have been attending multiple events together, including his 50th birthday party, and even showed public affection for each other at Clive Davis' pre-Grammys party.
Seems we're destined to find out about their relationship through photos only.
