Every year on the first Monday of May, fashion and celebrity royalty unite in an annual celebration of fashion and art. The Met Gala, also known as the Costume Institute Gala or the Met Ball, is one of the most important red carpets of the year, and also the most-watched red carpet event. From elaborate outfits to forbidden bathroom selfies and of course, the world’s biggest stars all in one building, this is one event you don’t want to miss! To help you out, we’ve put together a complete guide of everything you need to know about the Met Gala for 2018.
What is the Met Gala?
The Met Gala is an annual event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, that see’s the worlds biggest A-listers come together for the Costume Institute’s fundraising gala. The event is in celebration of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition, which has a different theme each year and is inspired by a particular artist, concept, fashion designer or creative.
What is this year’s theme?
In November 2017, The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that this year’s Met Gala theme will be “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, a distinctly religious and more conceptual theme than last years, which centred around Rei Kawakubo, the founder of fashion house Commes des Garçons. The exhibit will feature 50 pieces on loan from the Vatican, as well as 150 additional works inspired by Catholicism from designers such as Coco Chanel, John Galliano and Christian Dior.
Who is hosting the 2018 Met Gala?
This year’s event will be co-hosted by Met Ball veterans Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace. The 2018 gala will also be sponsored by Versace.

Celebrities that are known to wow the red carpet
Over the years, celebrities have given us some of the most ‘WOW’ moments in fashion history at the Met Gala, whether it was Rihanna’s 2015 Guo Pei fur-trimmed yellow cape, or Blake Lively’s 2017 feathered Versace gown. This year is no different, and we are already expecting some amazing looks from our favourite celebrity attendee’s!
Although nothing has been confirmed, high-profile model Gigi Hadid may have let slip who she will be wearing next Monday in an Instagram post she shared with her fans. The model posted a sweet happy birthday message to Donatella Versace, co-chair and sponsor of the 2018 Met Ball, writing; “I am so grateful to have you in my life, thank you for everything :) Can’t wait for our big date night Monday.”
If our speculations are true, (and we’re hoping they are), this will be the first time Gigi will wear one of Versace’s designs at the extravagant event.
Another Met favourite, Blake Lively disclosed in an interview earlier this year that this year’s gown might be one of her favourites’ to date! At the time, the dress had already been worked on for over 600 hours, and was still incomplete. Although we don’t know who the designer is just yet, we will be patiently waiting for the moment Blake hits the red carpet and steals the show for another year!
Will Kim and Kanye be attending?
The Wests have been attending the Met Gala together since 2013, when Kim wore possibly her most divisive look of all time, her custom floral Givenchy gown designed by Riccardo Tisci. Since then, we’ve seen both their Met styles evolve, particularly in 2016 when Kim and Kanye payed homage to the night’s theme, "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology," in complimentary Balmain looks.
Last year, however, Kim attended the event solo, with the reality star revealing that her husband remained home to look after their two children at the time, North and Saint. We also know that Kim’s diet and exercise schedule has been intense lately, with several Snapchats being posted by the star during her workouts at the gym with her trainer Melissa Alcantara.
Is this all in preparation for the biggest night on the fashion calendar? And will we get to see the powerhouse couple back on the Met Gala red carpet again?
