How to choose the right formula for the right area
It’s important to tailor your treatments to the way in which an area is feeling on any one particular day, so start out by assessing your face section by section to decide which kind of mask each one is in need of.
For dry areas
If an area is flaky, tight or rough to the touch, it’s feeling dehydrated and in need of a hydrating mask. Areas that often experience dryness include the cheeks and the delicate skin around the eyes.
Try: Wander Beauty Staycation Hydrating Mask, $64, available at sephora.com.au
For oily areas
If an area is showing visible shine and fingers come away from the skin coated in sebum, it’s overproducing oil and will benefit from a balancing mask. This issue commonly occurs in the T-zone, so try applying a mattifying formula to your forehead and nose.
Try: Sephora Collection Purifying & Mattifying Mud Mask, $26, available at sephora.com.au
For dull areas
If your complexion’s looking a little lacklustre, try a brightening formula on any areas showing dark spots or dullness to combat pigmentation and boost overall tone and glow.
Try: Too Faced Pineapple Glow Moisturising and Brightening Face Mask, $67, available at mecca.com.au
For congested areas
If an area is breaking out and showing blemishes, a purifying mask may be able to detoxify skin and soothe blemish-related inflammation. Just apply to any particular pimples, or areas where you are experiencing breakouts.
Try: GlamGlow x Barbie Limited Edition Supermud Clearing Treatment Mask, $40, available at mecca.com.au
For irritated areas
If your skin is itchy, red and feeling irritated, it is experiencing a reaction of some kind, and would no doubt appreciate the soothing benefits of a calming mask. In this case, just apply to any areas in which you're experiencing visible redness or where you can physically feel heat or inflammation being held.
Try: Revolution Skincare Aloe Vera & Water Lily Smoothing Face Mask, $16, available at priceline.com.au
For creasing areas
If you’re noticing the appearance of fine lines or a crepey skin texture (common in areas around the eyes and mouth, hi smile lines), try a firming formula to fill in gaps and boost elasticity.
Try: Peter Thomas Roth 24K Gold Mask Pure Luxury Lift & Firm Mask, $140, available at sephora.com.au
When using multiple masks, however, be sure to note the respective recommendations for how long to leave each formula on the face for.
After all, while a hydrating formula will only continue to enhance moisture, a harsher mask like a balancing blend could trigger inflammation if left on for too long.
So, read your instructions carefully, slather strategically, and be sure to take multiple selfies to honour your multiple masks.
