“It happened a few weeks ago, earlier this month, here at our cottage; just a standard typical night for us. Roasting a chicken ... trying to roast a chicken,” Harry joked of his proposal.
“She didn’t even let me finish, she said, ‘Can I say yes? Can I say yes?’" he explained. "And then were was hugs and I had the ring in my finger and I was like, ‘Can I—can I give you the ring?’ She goes, ‘Oh yes, the ring.’”
“It was a really nice moment, it was just the two of us and I think managed to catch her by surprise as well,” Harry said.
“Yes, it was just a cozy night ... I could barely let you finish proposing,” Markle replied. “Just an amazing surprise. It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee.”
The royal couple also revealed that they were set up on a “blind date” by a mutual friend about 18 months ago. Harry said he had never heard about Meghan or seen her hit TV show Suits.
“I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her. There she was sitting there and I was like, ‘OK, well I’m going to have to up my game’,” he said.
"I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly... All the stars were aligned - everything was just perfect," Harry said. "It was this beautiful woman just sort of literally tripped and fell into my life - I fell into her life."
Four weeks after they met, Harry persuaded Meghan to join him on a five-day break in Botswana. He said: "We camped out with each other under the stars, which was absolutely fantastic."
"After only two dates and then going effectively on holiday together in the middle of nowhere [in Botswana]...it was amazing to get to know her as quickly as I did," Harry said.
Meghan said didn’t learn about Prince Harry through the media, she learnt about him “through him”.
“Because in the States you don’t grow up with the same understanding of the royal family and so, while I now understand very clearly there’s a global interest there, I didn’t know much about him and so the only thing that I had asked her when she said she wanted to set us up was one question: Was he nice?” she said.
Meghan also spoke about how they handled the long distance while she was still filming Suits.
"It was just a choice, right? I think that very early on when we realized we were going to commit to each other, we had to invest the time and the energy to make that happen," Markle said. "I don’t see it as giving anything up. I just see it as a change. It’s a new chapter, right? And also keep in mind that I’ve been working on my show for seven years. We’re very very fortunate to have that kind of longevity in a series."
Once she hit the 100th episode, she felt she had accomplished what she wanted to on Suits. "Now it’s time to work as a team with you," she said, looking straight at Harry.
"That sense of responsibility was essentially day one or a couple of months when I realized I know that I’m in love with this girl," Harry reponded. "[I told her,] what you’re letting yourself in for is a big deal. It’s not easy....[But] at the end of the day, she chooses me. I choose her. Whatever we have to tackle will be us together as a team."
She also spoke of her surprise to the backlash when their relationship became public knowledge.
"I think I can very safely say as naively as it sounds now … I did not have any understanding of what it’d be like," Meghan said.
"I tried to warn you as much as possible, but I think both of us were totally surprised by the reaction after the first five or six months we had to ourselves," Harry said.
"There’s a misconception that because I worked in the entertainment industry this is something I’d be familiar with," Meghan said. "I’ve never been part of tabloid culture or pop culture. I lived a relatively quiet life. That was a really stark [change.]"
"I think we were hit so hard at the beginning I made the choice not to read anything…we focused all our energies on nurturing our relationship and on us," Meghan said.
We're so happy for the beautiful couple!
