It's recommended that you wash your makeup brushes after every use. Yes, you read that right! If you don't use your brushes daily, it is recommended that you wash them at least once a week.
1. Never get water into your ferrule (the part of the brush that holds the bristles together). The bristles of your brush are being held together by glue, so naturally, if this part of the brush gets wet, the glue and bristles will start to loosen and will cause the brush to shed.
2. Always air dry your brushes. Allowing brushes to air dry is the best method as it helps prolong the life of your brush. Other methods such as blow-drying can damage the fine bristles of your makeup tools, similar to blow-drying your hair and the effect the heat has on it. Also, ensure your brush is completely dry as this keeps the bacteria from growing.
3. Always dry brushes on the edge of a surface, like a basin. Prop your brush leaning on a rolled towel (or something similar) on the edge of a surface such as a counter or a shelf. Ensure the bristles are facing down (again to prevent water seeping into the ferrule). The circulation of air helps it to dry quicker and again prevent bacteria from growing.
