Taking to Instagram Stories, Duff shared a photo of Banks sitting on the floor with a tie-dye top on and her blonde hair tied up into a ponytail. "She has enough hair for a pony!" the proud mum wrote, before adding, "Oh and yes we pierced her ears."
Naturally, the internet being the internet, it didn't take long before people started criticising the parents and mum-shaming Duff. "I can't fathom why you would you think it's okay to have your daughters ears pierced. Causing her a tremendous amount of pain and discomfort," one Instagram user commented.
Duff then shared a sweet black and white photo showing her holding Banks in the kitchen - pierced ears and all. The comments started flooding in with many saying it's "unnecessary" to cause a child pain for a trivial beauty procedure with some saying they were going to unfollow her and others going as far as to call it child abuse.
But the comments weren't all bad. A lot of women jumped to Duff's defence, saying that it's her choice and - quite rightfully - that there are a lot worse things going on in the world. "I don't know why people feel the need to mum shame? This is a beautiful photo! Hilary isn't likely to take her daughter's earrings out just because a bunch of strangers tell her how horrible of a mum she is for doing it in the first place... there are far worse things parents do to their children," one person wrote.
"This is the most unproblematic Disney character we have... y’all goin leave Lizzie McGuire alone 😒" another said.
