“Honestly, it was just getting a little weird for us with all the romantic questions,” the pop star told PEOPLE. “We’re great friends, we love each other so much, and it just got to the point where it was getting a little weird … There’s no perfect time so we just decided to do it.”
“We just wanted to get adjusted in private," she continued, revealing it was a mutual decision to come forward when the time was right.
As Fergie begins promo of her new album, it seems the duo felt it was better to be honest than dance around awkward relationship questions.

The couple, who shares 4-year-old son Axl, confirmed the news to PEOPLE in a joint statement last week.
“With absolute love and respect we decided to separate as a couple earlier this year. To give our family the best opportunity to adjust, we wanted to keep this a private matter before sharing it with the public. We are and will always be united in our support of each other and our family,” it read.
Josh, 44, and Fergie, 42, began dating in 2004 before tying the knot in 2009. They welcomed their son in August 2013 and celebrated their 8th wedding anniversary in January of this year.
