When Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty launched its groundbreaking 40-shade (now 50-shade) Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, the demand was so phenomenal it sold out immediately. And while Fenty's foundation set a new standard for greater colour diversity in make-up, the product's formula also reached new grounds.
When the packaging says 'long-wear' it doesn't lie. Once applied, the foundation clings to your complexion and won't budge for hours–even for oily skin types. It's also sweat-proof and humidity resistant, a massive bonus for us Down Under. Basically, Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation was a total game-changer for those with oily skin.
But for those with skin that tends to be on the dryer side found the formula–like many mattifying foundations–has a tendency to emphasise dry patches. A concern which Rihanna took on board with haste.
Enter Fenty Beauty's brand new Pro Filt'r Hydrating Longwear Foundation, a formula with all of the same groundbreaking benefits as the original but designed to imbue normal to dry skin types with juicy hydration and a natural glow.
"Rihanna heard everybody loud and clear. She knew that it was her mission to come out with a foundation for dry skin," Fenty Beauty's global make-up artist told InStyle ahead of the launch of the new formula. "Rihanna is obsessed with the finish of the hydrating foundation, because it has the slightest bit of like a satin look to it, so it makes the skin look really stunning and fresh."
Ono tells us the shades in the hydrating formula are exact matches for the soft matte formula, so you won't have to colour match again if you already know your Fenty shade.
"Another great thing is that again the formula has a natural finish, so you’re not going to look oily or greasy. That’s Rihanna’s pet peeve is looking oily and greasy throughout the day. She loves to look highlighted and glowy, but only in the right areas," Ono adds.
The Pro Filt'r Hydrating Longwear Foundation is available from 15th August at Sephora. Until then, ensure you find your perfect match with Ono's complexion tips below!
When it comes to foundation formulas there are cool shades and warm shades, how do you determine which one you are?
Priscilla Ono: "The best tip is to ask yourself the sun question: when you go in the sun, do you burn easily? Or, do you burn and then tan? Or do you tan easily? If you burn easily, you’re more of a cool undertone, if you burn and then tan you’re more of a neutral undertone, and if you tan very easily, you’re likely to be a warm undertone."
What's your favourite tool for applying foundation?
Priscilla Ono: "If I’m going to go full force and I want a full coverage, I start with a brush, because you get more colour payoff when you use a brush. And then when it comes to blending and perfecting, I like to use a precision sponge to make sure edges around the nose area are blended. But if I want more of a natural finish, I prefer to either use fingers or a sponge, just because you’re going to get a thinner application and a more precise application."
Can you take a fuller coverage foundation like Fenty's Pro Filtr' and dial it down to a sheer finish?
Priscilla Ono: "Yes. A great trick tat I do for Rihanna any time she wants a no-makeup-makeup look, I’ll mix two pumps of primer with two pumps of foundation - sheers out the foundation really nicely."
