Net-a-Porter’s Elizabeth von der Goltz has made a career out of pinpointing fashion trends before they’ve become, well, a trend, meaning she’s the perfect industry insider to turn to for advice on what to invest in next.
In her role as global buying director for the online shopping mecca, von der Goltz’s knowledge traverses luxury labels to emerging contemporary brands, so you can rest assured she knows her Gucci from her Ganni.
Here, we pick the fashion buyer’s brain for her list of summer must-haves, and get a few tips on how to spot a trend from home. Hint: Instagram helps!
What trend should we be trying this summer?
“The whole Californian vibe seen throughout the spring 2019 shows is perfect for Australia. Think classic surf and beach culture with tie dye, Hawaiian shirts, bucket hats and shell jewellery.”
What are your go-to swimwear brands?
“Zimmermann is one of my go-to brands for swimwear. Their unique approach fuses nostalgia with refined laid-back femininity through thoughtful details like crochet, embroidery and panelling. I’m also a big fan of She Made Me and their classic crochet pieces, which instantly transport you to vacation mode."
What's the next big footwear must-have?
"At Net-a-Porter we are really happy for the return of the naked sandal, from brands like The Row and By Far. Australia has the perfect climate to sport a true barely-there sandal."
With party season well and truly here, what are your tips for creating a great evening look?
"The party season is one of the best times to have fun with fashion and discover something new, be it a new brand, idea or styling approach. I love pairing fine jewellery pieces; whether a Buccellati necklace, or Cartier watch, with emerging designer brands, such as Ganni or Rixo. I am also a huge fan of the shoe capsule we just launched with Aquazzura; a collaboration with five renowned fine jewellery designers."
What are you looking forward to shopping from the spring 2019 runways?
“The tie-dye jumpsuit from the Stella McCartney runway, Givenchy cargo pants, and the new Loewe basket bag.”
Can you reveal a few trends you have forecasted for next season?
"Real women dressing, which is the more feminine and sophisticated version of tailoring. California cool—tie-dyes and bucket hats used to create an effortlessly cool Cali-vibe. And modern couture. This trend sees the younger style set embracing sculptural yet wearable daily pieces."
What’s the secret to accurate forecasting and do you have any tips for how we can we look out for trends ourselves?
“Our team is constantly travelling to shows and appointments to unearth new brands for our customers. Our journey covers the four major fashion weeks and also the emerging shows in Sydney, Copenhagen, Seoul, Stockholm and Tbilisi, making sure we are staying ahead of the game. Social media, especially Instagram has impacted fashion in so many ways and is a huge source of discovery, allowing fashion to be less restricted. The two have become inseparable. It’s an immense platform to seek inspiration, discover new talent and enables us to see what our customers are loving.”
What emerging brands should we be keeping an eye out for?
"We have just launched Rotate’s first-ever season and the collection is amazing. We are also about to launch Sydney-based label Matin. We love the brand’s aesthetic—soft, fresh, and grounded."
