Dakota Fanning has shared a heartwarming tribute to her ‘ray of sunshine’ Brittany Murphy, eight years after her untimely death.

Murphy starred as the party-girl-turned-nanny to Fanning’s mature tween in the 2003 comedy Uptown Girls. The pair were inseparable during press, and it seems that all these years later the young actress still has a place in her heart for her special friend.

Murphy died of pneumonia in December 2009, at just 32 years of age. In a recent Instagram post, Fanning paid tribute to her former co-star and friend with a throwback picture and touching caption.

“Brittany Murphy was a ray of sunshine that made every day of filming magical for me,” Fanning wrote in the caption of this snap, adding the hashtag #uptowngirls and a sunshine emoji.

It’s not the first time that Fanning, now aged 24, has spoken fondly of Murphy. She’s posted many times on Instagram about her friend, and made a loving statement in 2009 when she passed away.

“I got to know Brittany when we made the film Uptown Girls,” Fanning said in a statement when she died. “We became great friends despite the fact we were many years apart in age. Brittany had such a warm child-like spirit that drew people to her. With her goes a piece of my heart and I will miss her terribly. I know how strong Brittany’s love was for her family and my heart goes out to all of them, especially her mother Sharon. I love you Brittany.”

We’re not crying, you are.
