InStyle: Was it always your aim to create a sustainable label?
NC: "We started with more natural fabrics; cotton and silk and fabrics that broke down really easily in the environment. But once we started working on the Woolmark project, we wanted to make that a collection that was 100 per cent sustainable. So, taking ideas from [the Woolmark capsule collection] and working on that for a whole year allowed us to implement things into our own brand at the same time. Now, all the labels we use are made from recycled fabrics, the hangtags we’ve changed, we’ve changed a lot of our sourcing and how we approach our editing of fabric. [Colovos] has evolved more and more [into a sustainable label] along the way.”
InStyle: Did you expect to take so much of what you learned during the Woolmark experience into your everyday practice?
MC: “No, I mean, we learned so much from that experience that I wasn’t expecting. We had a lot of mentors—biologists and engineers and people that really taught us a lot about where and how to source fabrics."
InStyle: You've included a lot of denim in the collection—why is that?
NC: “Denim has been in our background for a long time. I think it’s one of those fabrics that just stays—everyone wears it. We keep going back to it because I think it just fits into our lifestyle as well; we both love wearing it. The denim capsule that we did last year did really well for us so we decided to continue with that sort of more relaxed, casual clothing. But I think our take on denim is a little interesting and different, not just a classic blue jean.”
InStyle: How can we refresh our denim this season?
NC: "We do a super high-waisted jean that has two buckles at the side and a tapered leg, so it’s kind of like a really modern mum jean. And then going forward, it’s kind of nice if your denim is a little bit lighter [weight] and the pant leg can spill onto the ground."
InStyle: What's next for Colovos?
MC: "I want to get into accessories—shoes, small leather goods, handbags, just practical things. And menswear."
NC: "We have a lot of men asking us when we’re coming out with men’s clothing, so it’s definitely something that we’d like to do."
