Though One Tree Hill left airwaves 6 years ago, the drama is as high as ever.
Actress Sophia Bush spoke with Radio Andy host Andy Cohen on Wednesday and, naturally, her short-lived marriage to former co-star Chad Michael Murray eclipsed everything else she discussed throughout the nearly 20-minute interview (which included her role in Incredibles II and the sexual harassment she endured from OTH show runner Mark Schwahn).
“Everybody’s been 22 and stupid,” she said with a laugh. “[The marriage] was not a thing I actually really wanted to do.”
When asked why she wed Michael Murray if she didn’t want to, Bush answered, “Because how do you let everybody down ... when you have bosses telling you that you’re the only person who gets a person to work on time, and 200 people either get to see their kids at night or they don’t because our days start on time … ?”
“What the public knows—it’s not the tip of the iceberg,” she continued. “Hilarie [Burton] and I used to laugh and we were like, ‘If we had a behind-the-scenes show, the drama would be so much f—king better than the drama that the writers write.’”
“People won’t let it go,” she went on, voicing her frustration with the public’s continued fascination more than a decade after she and Murray’s divorce was finalized. “Can you imagine if the idiot you dated when you were a senior in high school—if people still would not stop talking to you about?” she asked Cohen.
Of course, Bush’s statement didn’t slide without a rebuttal from Murray’s camp.
In a statement to People, Murray’s rep slammed Bush’s claims as “ludicrous,” explaining, “Chad conducts himself in a completely professional manner and would never marry for any reason but love. Thirteen years since his divorce from Sophia, he has a very happy family life with his wife and children. He has completely moved on and doesn’t feel the need to engage in this type of behavior.”
OK, well that last part doesn’t appear to be completely true … Murray, who wed actress Sarah Roemer in 2015, took to Twitter on Thursday with some seemingly shady responses to Bush’s interview, one of which appeared to accuse his ex of lying.
Sophia, too, tweeted about the situation, clarifying that her quotes were largely taken out of context and misconstrued by the press.
Interestingly, Bush also seemed to take a jab at Murray when she re-tweeted Patton Oswalt’s take on people who cite the bible (Murray discussed reading the bible daily in one of his tweets above). Oswalt, however, was likely referring to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who cited the Bible to back up the Trump Administration's controversial immigration policy—so Bush may have also been sharing the anti-Sessions sentiment.
And, that’s not all … Murray’s wife fanned the flames when she posted a meme on Instagram reading, “Wait a second … my producers also made me marry Chad Michael Murray!”
Bush was right—this is *much* better than One Tree Hill.
