With those long limbs and symmetrical bone structure, you could be forgiven for assuming British beauty Cara Delevingne is simply another London It-girl. Yet this self-confessed feminist is much more than just a pretty face, and she has marched to her own beat since being signed to a major UK modelling agency at just 17. Her playful personality, combined with a willingness to speak out about social issues—from sexuality to depression and harassment—continue to reveal a self-possessed young woman wise beyond her years.
Now 25, Delevingne has added the roles of actor, musician, designer and author to her resume, while fronting countless fashion campaigns for major international brands. She has also been named the new face of Dior’s latest skincare launch, Capture Youth. But what is Delevingne’s own idea of beauty? “Happiness, confidence, individuality,” she asserts, adding that she feels most beautiful “when I’m surrounded by the people I love”.
Here, she reveals details of her new ambassadorship, and top beauty tips and tricks, all with that customary uninhibited vibe.
What does being a Dior woman mean to you?
Joining an elite group of women such as Natalie Portman, Jennifer Lawrence, Charlize Theron and Rihanna is such an honour. I am proud to be included among powerful women who make bold artistic decisions.
How does your approach to beauty align with the brand?
I love this quote from Christian Dior: ‘I dream of making women not only more beautiful, but happier too.’ It is such a great message. To be part of the Dior family feels totally organic and, you know, we share the same initials: CD. So, I recognise a Dior girl when I see my initials on her!
What is it like to be the muse for the new Capture Youth line?
I try to live every day in the moment. Growing up, I was definitely
a tomboy, so I was never really into beauty and fashion, but I have always been aware and in love with Dior. I am so honoured that [when] they thought about my generation who want to look
after their skin that they thought of me. It was unexpected
and a wonderful surprise.”
Describe your daily beauty regimen.
Most of my beauty routine is determined by what kind of work I’m doing that day. If I’m on set, then [it’s] usually focused on cleansing and moisturising, as I have to wear a lot of make-up. If I’m on a press tour, most of my beauty regimen is taken care of by my wonderful glam team, as we work from morning to evening. On [my] days off, [it] is very minimal, but still important.
What’s your main skin concern?
Since I’m on planes so often, I’m always thinking about how to keep my skin healthy and hydrated.
Tell us about your favourite product.
Capture Youth is made for girls [who are] my age. When you start to think about skincare in the long-term, [the range] is perfect, as it stops the signs of ageing before they appear. I especially like the Glow Booster. It helps if my skin is feeling sensitive while travelling.
What’s your top beauty tip?
My tip is to mix the [Dior Capture Youth Age-Delay Advanced] cream with one of the five serums, depending on your everyday need.
Do you have any skincare advice for other young women?
I believe that beauty comes from within, so I would advise young women to take care of their mind and their heart as much as they take care of their face and skin.
Do you follow a specific diet or exercise regimen?
My diet consists of a lot of salmon and vegetables. I also love a traditional English breakfast. I practice a lot of yoga—I feel it is a great constant for me, no matter what country I’m in.
You have more than 40 million followers on Instagram. What is the art of taking a great pic?
Capturing a moment in its fullest. It doesn’t matter if it’s perfect [or not]. I like seeing people post all ranges of feelings and emotion. It’s about being open and honest. People shouldn’t be ashamed of the truth.
How would you describe your personality?
Passionate, determined and open-minded.
Who are your female role-models?
I look up to strong women who are not afraid to make bold choices. Tilda Swinton, Jennifer Lawrence Lawrence, Emma Thompson, Reese Witherspoon, Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie and Meryl Streep are all heroes of mine.
