How do you make one of the most-talked about shows of all time even better when it returns for an unexpected second season? Just add Meryl Streep.
Meryl has been confirmed to join the cast of Big Little Lies Season 2 as Mary Louise Wright, the mother of Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård). While the news that the prestigious actress would be joining Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman on the show was confirmed back in January, the rest of the retuning cast was unclear until now.
Then, on the 16th of February, HBO finally confirmed the news fans had been waiting for: Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley are also all officially signed up to come back.
Meryl's Mary Louise Wright arrives in Monterey seeking answers, concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following her son’s death.
As fans of the series know, Perry's death was the result of an attack on both his wife Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman) and his rape victim Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley), that saw Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz) push him down the stairs in an attempt to keep him away from the women. The five ladies banded together to alter the story during police interviews, saying he "fell" to help Bonnie avoid punishment. The series ended on a cliffhanger, with a skeptical detective staring at the women through binoculars.
Producer and star Reese Witherspoon welcomed the show's latest leading lady on-board with a heartfelt Instagram post.
"Beyond thrilled to have the one, the only, Meryl Streep joining the cast of #BLL for season 2. Get ready for more wine, secrets, and #BigLittleLies. Monterey better watch out!!!"
