Turning up to a Louis Vuitton x Chrome Hearts dinner in New York City, Hadid donned the vest in celebration of the newly-minted, much-lauded Louis Vuitton menswear designer, Virgil Abloh, who designed the neon number. Pairing the bright yellow, pocket-packed piece with an oversized, light blue mens shirt and a pair of the brand’s signature chunky sneakers, the finished effect was as sleek as it was practical — and we can’t believe we’re saying that.
In reality, this look just should not work. It’s objectively ugly, right? The vest is far too bright, she’s not wearing any pants, and the sneakers are famously naff. But somehow, the model really pulls it off. Call it the Bella effect, but there’s no doubt this Hadid can wear anything and make it covetable. A modern day Carrie Bradshaw? Maybe.
The vest in question was first seen on the men’s Louis Vuitton spring/summer 2019 runway, and has since been worn by rappers including Drake and ASAP Rocky. It features a number of pockets and a padded interior, carrying on from 2018’s favoured ‘gorpcore’ look — a fashion movement that favours comfort and practicality over traditional ‘fashion’ silhouettes. Going one step further, the neon hue is an on-trend nod to the shade of the season, with everyone from Kim Kardashian West to Kendall Jenner and JLo making the fluro life their own.
So yes, while the neon vest might not be for everyone, you can’t deny this outfit is killer.
