The hardcore classes which, combine strength training with sprint running, boasts on their website that just one session can burn "1,000 calories or more" — perhaps that's the reason why celebs like Adriana Lima, Kim Kardashian, and Jessica Alba are huge fans.
Needless to say, it's piqued our curiosity. We caught up with Barry's Bootcamp head trainer Blake Bridges, straight from L.A. to have all our burning questions answered, just in time for summer!
We’ve heard that Barry’s is highly-addictive. Why do you think people get hooked?
I believe the addiction starts with the workout itself, followed by the people and culture. I like to say people come for the workout and then stay for the family and fun. Barry’s has truly stood the test of time - We are celebrating 20 years of Red Room magic this year!
Simply put, the workout works: combining cardio, where you are switching between runs, sprints, hills, and recoveries with resistance and strength training, where you are tightening, toning and building the muscle. Barry’s is your ultimate one-stop shop.
Can beginners attend classes? The workouts sound very intense. Similarly, what if you aren’t able to run yet?
Absolutely! Barry’s is for all fitness levels and ages. When doing the cardio portion of a class, we give 3-speed ranges: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. As for the floor, we will always offer modifications when needed. I always tell first-time clients to pace themselves, listen to your body and work your way up to Intermediate and Advanced options!
If you aren’t able to run OR you don’t want to run on a certain day due to an injury or any other reason, we have a Double Floor option. Doing Double Floor in classes is an easy way to focus on the strength and conditioning aspects of our workouts, without the treadmill component. Don’t worry. Even without the treadmill, you’ll be sore for days.
What do you recommend as a post-workout snack?
I’m a smoothie guy myself. I love that you’re able to pack in so many nutrients into a single shake for fast digestion and fuel. We have over 20 varieties of smoothies at our Fuel Bar to choose from – you can also make your own creation by adding or substituting any ingredients! My favourite 3 smoothies this week (they change every week because we have so many good ones) are the Body by Blake (of course), the Muscle up and the Salted Caramel Macadamia. At Barry’s, you can also pre-order your post-workout shake so it is ready for you immediately after class.
How many classes do you have to attend before you see results?
Barry’s clients see results fast. If you are going 3-5 times a week, you should start to see & feel a change in your body in 2 weeks.
You should notice a psychological change almost immediately. You’ll feel better about yourself, you’ll be more motivated to work out, and seeing the heads whipping around as you stroll by doesn’t exactly hurt your ego.
What’s the difference between Barry’s and other popular HIIT classes?
Barry’s consists of a 55-minute workout involving 25 minutes of interval-based, cardiovascular treadmill routines, mixed with 25 minutes of strength and resistance training using free weights, bands, and other equipment.
The classes are structured to target five individual muscle groups, specific to each day of the week: Monday - Arms & Abs, Tuesday - Butt & Legs, Wednesday - Chest, Back & Abs, Thursday – Hardcore Abs, Friday, Saturday & Sunday - Full-body. Each Instructor plans their own workouts every day, so no two classes will ever be the same, keeping it fresh and exciting for regulars.
Barry’s is more than a workout. With Instructor curated playlists, sexy red mood lighting and sweaty bodies, accompanied by our hard-hitting workouts that always keep you guessing, the signature Red Room creates a nightclub vibe that is unmistakably Barry’s.
When it comes to diet, what’s your personal motto?
Moderation and balance!
What’s your best advice for women who want to tone their problem areas (tummy, thighs, bum, and arms) ahead of summer?
Variety and consistency. The reason I was originally drawn to Barry’s myself was the fact that they focused on certain muscle groups each day of the week and that no two workouts are ever the same, so you are always getting variety.
Mapping out a weekly workout schedule to fit into your everyday schedule will help you stay on top of your fitness goals.
