Carrie Bradshaw and Fendi’s Baguette bag, I dare you to name a more iconic duo. Shot to fame with its appearance on Sex And The City, the humble Baguette, named after its likeness to the French stick of bread, has well and truly made a return.
Once a staple of the late nineties and early 2000s, the small, bread-shaped shoulder bag was invented by Silvia Fendi in 1997, going on to become a staple in every fashion girl’s wardrobe and a silhouette that defined the era. Now, in 2019, Fendi has re-released the shape, most recently in a purple sequined version which featured none other than Sarah Jessica Parker in the campaign.
Now, thanks to celebrities like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, the style has joined the cache of similarly throwback ‘00s trends that enjoy modern fame: cargo pants, skinny sunglasses and low rise jeans all included. Baguette shapes have been embraced by designers all over the world, with labels including By Far and Brie Leon hopping on the mini, close-to-the-shoulder bag which is best worn with a dose of Paris Hilton-esque confidence.
“The Baguette is a really fun style to wear, super playful yet feminine and an understated elegance that goes easily with a broad range of looks. You can dress it up or just style it back with a pair of jeans and a white tee for a more simple look,” founder of Brie Leon, Janine Zafra told InStyle.
Suggesting we style ours with a cropped cardigan or oversized blazer, Zafra is a fan of pairing like-throwback with like-throwback. Chunky sneakers, tie dye… the works.
“I would style the bag with straight high-waisted jeans, a little cropped cardigan or top, and an oversized leather jacket. For nighttime, it would look really cute with a little blazer dress,” she says, noting Hadid, Devon Lee Carlson and French It girl Jeanne Damas as muses of the style.
But just like most classic shapes — think Dior’s Saddle Bag and Gucci’s Bamboo bag, which have similarly been re-introduced in recent years — the baguette isn’t going anywhere soon. As we’ve all learnt, anything Carrie Bradshaw touches turns to gold — 20 years later or otherwise.
