Michael Turnbull chose to leave Bachelor In Paradise a single man in last night's episode. The star, who was the runner-up in Sam Frost's season of The Bachelorette, made the decision to leave based on a general lack of connection with the remaining single women on the show.
We caught up with Michael this morning to chat about his choice, his relationship status, and his thoughts on the 'Luke McLeod cheating on Lisa Hyde' scandal.
InStyle: What made you decide to leave Bachelor In Paradise?
Michael Turnbull: I think for me, I had explored all of the opportunities there to build a connection with someone on the island. I was getting to the point where I was quite exhausted and tired, and I was like 'even if someone came in now, I don't think I'd be quite myself.' So i just wanted to take some time out by myself and leave on my own terms. I had a big goodbye chat to everyone where we all hugged it out. I think it was just the right time for me to go.
IN: You'd been in the resort for three weeks at that point, it makes sense you'd be over it if you're not in a couple...
MT: Yeah I was there for sort of three weeks, and it was full on. It's one of those things where I just wanted to call time on my own terms and leave when it was the right thing for me.
IN: You had a thing with Tara Pavlovic at the start of the show, which was sort of "ruined" when Keira Maguire took you on a date. What did you think when you came back and she was clearly irritated, did you realise there was no fixing it?
MT: Yeah I came back from the date and she was pretty drunk to be honest - like hammered. She probably said some things she regrets, and we just had a chat and I said given the situation I thought it was best we just stay friends, and I had a great chat with her and we parted ways as friends. After that, she started spending more time with Sam [Cochrane] and I moved on as well, so it was okay.
IN: What was it like to see Tara and Sam's relationship blossoming, because it was so surprising to us viewers...
MT: It was very surprising, but I was happy for both Tara and Sam. I wish them all the best, and I enjoyed being around their shenanigans throughout the experience, we always had a good laugh.
IN: What are your thoughts on the reports that Luke and Lisa have split because he cheated?
MT: I think it sucks and it's a bit of a shame. I think the world of Lisa and I think she deserves someone who will do the right thing by her. I don't know the details of what happened, but I believe the trust was broken. I hope Luke and Lisa can fix it, but if not I also hope they can move forward. Lisa's wonderful and I hope she's okay.
IN: You were interested in Lisa on the show. In time, do you think something could happen between the two of you?
MT: I think for me, me and Lisa are probably just friends. We're very good friends, but in terms of a romantic connection I don't think there's anything anymore. I think if it was going to happen it would have happened in Paradise.
