Hannah Crofts is experiencing a bout of bad luck. “We were in America and I chopped my thumb open and I had to go to the emergency room, and then I broke my passport so I had to get an emergency passport, and now I’m back in Australia and I can’t get a new passport without a birth certificate in time for our trip to the US next week,” she says. But what’s keeping her in high spirits is the fact that her band, All Our Exes Live In Texas, has released their debut album When We Fall (something she never imagined happening let alone the rave reviews). Ahead of its release, we caught up with Crofts to talk about the record, and other band names that didn’t make the cut.
How long did the record take to put together?
It took us about two and a half years to record and release it in the end, so we did crowdfunding at the start and ended up getting one third of what we needed, which was amazing. Yesterday we had a production line going for about three and a half hours to sign all the copies that we're pre-sold.
Is that two and a half years including the songs too?
When we first started the record, we didn’t think our band was going to go past the first gig. The first gig - it wasn’t a joke but it was put together for a tribute night for Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? And then we got booked for another gig and another one, and then we ended up recording our first single ‘Tell Me’ and put that out before we even knew how it was going to go. So the songs happened along the way. It was a really long process but we didn’t want to rush it.
And it’s getting some amazing reviews too, it got four stars on Rolling Stone?
Woohoo my family’s so proud! [Laughs] That’s the first review of it I’ve seen so...!
What does this album represent to you?
This is the first one I’ve been a part of, so before we started the band, I had partially given up the idea that I’d ever be in a band and I was doing music management. I’m just so proud of it, I never thought I’d ever be in this position.
I hate this question but I do have to ask: where does the band name come from?
Because we had to come up with a band name in a week for this gig, we googled ‘world’s worst country song titles’ and that was one of the top ones. It was going to be that or ‘it’s your fault our kids are ugly’.
You should do a concept album of all the band names you had to reject.
Yes! I would love to [laughs].
