Saturday on the move
I’m a big believer that practical doesn’t have to be boring, which is why I do my weekend food shopping at the Kings Cross weekly farmers’ market. I pick up fresh fruit, homemade bread and a bunch of lilies as a little gift to myself. This is one of Sydney’s best markets for fresh produce, plants and gourmet goodies - it’s fresh-air shopping at its best and a brilliant spot for people watching. It certainly makes picking up the weekend essentials much more enjoyable than doing laps around a soulless supermarket.
Next, it’s time to drop off the kids for school sport. The bags, multiple pairs of shoes, sport gear and tennis racquets get loaded into the boot and I am surprised that there is room to spare. 45 minutes of hectic traffic later I’m wondering if there’s actually a secret conspiracy to make kids play sport as far away as possible from their actual school. We crank up the impressive Bang and Olufsen stereo and ride it out with carpool karaoke while I acquaint myself with the A5’s handy traffic jam assist function. I also take a minute to check out the car’s interior, which is dark and luxurious with beautifully stitched leather seats and steering wheel. I notice the door panels and seatbelt clips have a suede finish – nice!
Sport’s finally done and dusted, so I drop the girls off at home and head to Bondi for a quick lunch and a catch up with a friend. I need to pick up a birthday present for my husband and am quietly panicking about taking a car (that’s not my own) into the Westfield carpark, but the front and rear park assist make it a breeze to get in and out of parking spots. I’m still completely baffled by the camera that gives an image of the car from above with a 360-degree view.
Sunday’s weather looks promising for lunch with friends at The Newport. The water’s sparkling over Bayview and as we watch the local dogs splashing in the shallow water, I’m taken by just how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful city. Heading home through one of Sydney’s hillier suburbs I have the chance to see how the Audi handles and I’m impressed by its responsiveness and how well it corners, sitting low and tightly on the road.
To be honest, I’m sad to have to give it back. While I never questioned the A5’s elegance and quality credentials (I love the way that door ‘clunks’ closed), I had initially wondered if it was going to be too compact for my lifestyle, but I’m pleasantly surprised by what a great mix of style and practicality it actually offers. Proving once again that practical can be anything but boring.
