For Suits star Patrick J. Adams, negative comments did the trick.
In August the actor took to social media to wish Meghan Markle, his co-star on the USA show, a happy birthday. He portrays Mike Ross, a young lawyer and also a love interest to Rachel Zane, Markle's Suits character. The fictional pair generally have a happily-ever-after situation going on.
In Adams's since-deleted post, Markle plants a friendly, cute kiss on her on-screen romantic partner's cheek.
Apparently, his posting of the throwback photo led to an online firestorm that led Adams to say adios to all things social media. After all, Markle has been dating Prince Harry (the royal confirmed the news last November after Markle experienced online abuse as a result of the relationship).
In a new interview with Esquire, Adams opened up about the public drama. “I went to bed, and woke up in the morning and realized, ‘Oh, yeah. I live in a world where you can’t post things about Meghan,” he said.
“I had this onslaught of people retweeting the thing, people thinking it was a recent picture, and I just thought, ‘What the hell is going on?’ It was such an innocent moment of sentimentality that was twisted into something totally different,” he added. “It made me feel like … why put myself through this? We’re like brother and sister, it’s not like it was lurid or anything, but it just became a story that people wanted to talk about.”
Unfortunately, the experience seems unavoidable when your co-star is in a relationship with none other than the fifth in line to the British throne. Casual.
But Adams also confirmed he would consider returning online—just not for now. Besides, he admitted to not be very skilled at posting. “I’m not good at it, I overthink every post that I put out and the ramifications and who’ll be listening and how it’ll be received,” he said.
