"It’s about passion – and work experience. (Lots of work experience)"Hayley D’Onofrio
“From the time I was old enough to put pen to paper, I have loved to write. I was also passionate about beauty and fashion, so when I eventually found out that I could combine them and make a career out of it, I did everything I could to make it happen.
While I was studying at university, I completed multiple internships at television stations, newspapers and magazines, juggling them with my part-time job, university during the day, and study via correspondence at night.
After a stint in digital as a beauty editor, I eventually transitioned to my current role as Beauty Director for InStyle, where I now am fortunate enough to work across both the magazine and online, and love what I do each and every day.
My advice? Dream big, work hard for what you want, and the rewards will follow.
"Say yes to everything"Lucy Wood
From volunteering at fashion festivals, to assisting as many stylists as possible, I took on every opportunity that came my way.
I contacted anyone I was passionate about working for - even if I didn’t think I’d get a response (though, to my surprise, I usually did). Later, I was lucky enough to assist on a British magazine, and it was brilliant hands-on experience.
I’d also recommend staying in touch with any industry contacts that you make. It was the first market editor I ever assisted who put me in touch with InStyle and helped me land my dream job here.”
My advice? Be patient, positive and persistent.
“Follow your passion”Katherine Green
“I studied photography and fashion at university, and while I was a student I often collaborated with people in similar design fields outside of study. Looking back that really helped me build up contacts in the fashion industry.
Later, while working my way up from the bottom as a fashion assistant, I also spent any free time I had with photographers and stylists. Building those contacts – as well as making the conscious decision to stick to what I loved (fashion!) and then work very, very hard at it – were what helped me land my dream job.
Now, working as Fashion Director and having spent more than a decade in the position, I still love it as much as when I started.”
My advice? Seek out people who have similar interests to you and collaborate with them….you never know where this might lead you!
“Know that every opportunity will teach you something new”Lulu Custance,
“I’ve always challenged myself to make the most of my opportunities.
Before landing my dream role at InStyle I interned with a local stylist while studying fashion at university. Before long I had enough experience to begin freelancing as an assistant to a number of stylists.
Even then, I knew that every opportunity would teach me something new and I never took that for granted. As I saw it, each job was another opportunity to become better in my field. I also quickly learned that efficiency, professionalism and optimism were crucial qualities for success.”
My advice? Every opportunity big or small is one to learn something new.
"Believe in your abilities, be gracious and ask lots of questions"Arielle Tsoukatos
I studied Communications at university and interned throughout my studies. I put my hand up for a variety of work experience opportunities from my local paper to the fashion and beauty cupboards of glossy monthlies. The fantastic mentors I met during that time helped me score my first job in the industry.
Before landing landing my dream role at InStyle I worked as an editorial assistant at a magazine for two years. Every experience has helped me figure out what I'm truly passionate about. This industry can involve long hours and stressful situations – but when you love what you do it makes everything worthwhile.
My advice? Go into every opportunity with an open mind and positive attitude, you might be surprised where you find yourself.
