InStyle Interviews Phoebe Tonkin Actress Phoebe Tonkin mesmerises in a selection of the season's most alluring textures and silhouettes... With a coy grin, Phoebe Tonkin confesses, "I love to play the bad girl." But, according to the 23-year-old Sydney-born actress, "playing" is precisely what it is. "I was awkward at school and definitely wasn't cool. It's fun to [portray] someone so different to who I am." Her latest role, as a popular witch with a taste for dark magic in the US teen drama The Secret Circle (FOX8), has given her a chance to explore this contrasting side—so too, this photo shoot. "It's like the housewife waiting for the pool boy," she laughs. Tonkin first hit screens in 2006 as mermaid Cleo Sertori on television's H2O: Just Add Water. Her star quickly rose with appearances on Packed To The Rafters (2009) and Home and Away (2010), and a role in the Australian big-budget film adaptation of Tomorrow When The War Began (2010). A move to the US in 2010 delivered more fortune. "I was in LA for pilot- season auditions, and when I did eventually get [The Secret Circle], I was very grateful because I knew what it was like not having a job." It didn't take long for the actress to find her feet in Tinseltown. "LA can be lonely, but I admit I got lucky," she explains. "I met two of my good friends—[actresses] Teresa Palmer and Tahyna Tozzi—at auditions, and they kind of took me under their wings. They're such beautiful girls." —Chris Urankar Photographed by Pierre Toussaint Styled by Tavlin Moline Don't Miss Front Row Creche No need for a babysitter if you're an A-lister.
